The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins Getting the Film Treatment

Yes, the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is being made into a movie (You can read the news on Comingsoon.net here). I first heard about the book some time last year, when the book happened to be both mentioned by Stephenie Meyer and featured in one of Amazon Best of the Month list.

Now the first time I read the synopsis/editorial reviews on Amazon.com...I was like blah. Is that what its suppose to be about? A futuristic reality tv gladiator show featuring children. And even though I've never actually watch Battle Royale...I'm getting the Battle Royale vibe with the whole plot.

But I won't write it off yet. I have been seeing more stuff about the book on the net the last few months...its popularity is rising...so like it was for me with Twilight...maybe I'll check it out. And with a movie bound to be released ever so soon...I guess I will try to read it before I catch the movie.

Next...I wonder who the cast will be.

  1. Read the book in less than 24 hours. It is great; I completely reccommend it. Please list the casting director, calls, etc. if you find out! Thanks!

  2. The movie will only be out in 2011, so it will be a while before the cast is announced.

But hey, since you have read the book...who are the actors who would make the ideal cast for the movie?

  3. I hope they cast talented unknowns who well fit Suzanne Collin's descriptions of the characters. But, I do think Taylor Lautner would be perfect for the part of Gale. Just give him some grayish contacts and he's set. At least, that's how I picture Gale to be. In the book it says Katniss and Gale look like they'd be related, so maybe they could cast a girl who looks like him. Also, maybe Steve Carell as Haymitch and Amy Poehler as Effie Trinket. AAH! I'm just so thrilled for this film. I hope it's awesome.

I am very excited for the movie,
and I also wonder if they will be open casting the Character, because, my friends who have read the book day I look just like Katniss, with shorter hair.

Grey eyes, light frame, average height, naturally dark hair...

  7. Tbh, i don't get why everyone says they'd go for Katniss just because they look like her.. You'd get a wig/ dye hair and have contacts.. they ain't gonna be fussy over hair and eye colour when they can change that easily if they can find someone who can be her..

  8. i agree with Suzanne F. i really think unknowns should play in this movie. There is a girl who i have seen in a few movies(not a main character or anything.) but her name is Madison Harrison. she would be perfect!

  9. I agree completely. They should get relative unknowns for the kids roles...just so they can grow into their roles. The books are pretty popular...Done properly...the movie could too...and these kids could be looking at a three picture deal. And yes, I hope they get actual kids for the movies and not opt for a bunch of 20 somethings (given that the themes are a bit difficult).

  11. Im reading the book for a school project and just cant wait to keep reading it!!! i love it and for a role for Katniss i think that Shailene Woodley from the tv show "The secret life of the american teenager" she would b perfect and for Haymitch i agree Steve Carell would b amazing and also i agree that Amy Poehler would b soo funny. And i dont think that unknowns should b the roles cuz ppl would just want funny well known ppl and speek for my whole school when i say that. but i hope u agree with the ppl for the roles i chose:)

  15. I couldn't find when the casting calls are, but August almost seems too late. Nina Jacobson came out saying that she wants new people, not teen heart throbs, and that they want to start filming fall 2010....i can't find where the casting calls will be! where did you find it?

  21. I feel as though I should speak up for this book. What about?
For one it could be really good. Or it could be another twilight. They screwed it up big time yet strangly people enjoy it. Few films ever make it big when they're based on a book/s.
Second. Personally I don't want this story liked because the actors are pretty or hot or its been amped up by the media. Authentic, real, exactly like the book. Like when we first meet Katniss simply this- base zero. Obviously. Damn I hope they choose the right person as I do for all the characters. Supporting roles matter just as much as the main.
Third. You can say you look like her but you may not to others. If you did end up playing Katniss...well it would be a challenge. I admire that girl and like several others aspire to be her. An unknown would be perfect. But not an arragont one.
On a personal note I would love to play Katniss but I know I wouldn't do to well dispite the chatracterstics we share and I'm sure many people share. I would love though to simply be a part of it. Behind the scenes or something. Though I'm sixteen and too young. Aparantly.
Yeah well that's all I gotta say apart from this: Just hope they do a good job. Or a wowing, stunning job if they have the ability. Love this trilogy...don't ruin it.

  22. Hmm. Twilight, I thought they kept it pretty close to the book. Which in some aspects was what made the movie bad...that plus the bad dialogue and acting. What I'm saying is not everything that sounds good on paper translate well on screen. So having a movie exactly like the book would not necessarily make it a good movie. Having said that, I still enjoyed the Twilight, it was a fun watch.

  23. The 'battle royale ' vibe that you've mentioned is the reason I never want to pick The Hunger Game let along reading it. I hate the fact that Collins's book become more famous than the original one, Battle Royale. I love Battle Royale very much, one of my alltime fav books.

I won't walk to the cinema to watch the movie...unless the rumour comes true (I hope it won't come true tho). There are rumours of my favorite actor, Cillian Murphy, will be one of the casts.

  24. I have since read the book and loved it. There lots of drama and action. Highly addictive and there's just this edge about it that keeps you reading.

Now the whole 'Battle Royale' vibe thing...its definitely there because of the whole putting children in a deadly reality tv arena. But I'm not sure about calling Battle Royale the 'original one'. I'm not really sure how Collins came about with the story(supposedly from watching some reality tv show...I might be wrong)but I think it has a lot of notable differences from Battle Royale(at least from what I gather from watching the movie, I've never read the book). For example the arena in which the kids compete in is extremely dangerous and volatile, and some of the kids that were randomly picked have spent a lifetime preparing to fight and kill.

And I think one of the reason the Hunger Games is more popular now than Battle Royale is because it was written in English and is a Young Adult novel, both of which makes the book more accessible.

Anyhow, I hope you read the book. I think its great, and even though it is a YA book there is some heavy stuff going on in it.

  25. Best book ever! I really wish it doesn't turn into another Twilight though. It will be difficult to get the movie just right, but I really hope they don't screw it up.
